Cognitive distortions are inaccurate thoughts that often reinforce negative thinking and emotions, like anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. They’re subtle but powerful mental traps that can skew our perceptions, making everyday challenges feel overwhelming.
Common examples of this include “catastrophising” (expecting the worst possible outcome), “black-and-white thinking” (seeing things as all good or all bad) and “mind reading” (assuming we know what others think of us without evidence).
Fortunately, these thinking patterns aren’t fixed and with the right strategies, we can learn to identify and counteract them.
Identifying and Challenging Distortions
The first step to overcoming cognitive distortions is awareness. It’s not uncommon for people to feel trapped by their own thoughts without realising how cognitive distortions play a role. By recognising these thought patterns, we can begin to question their validity and challenge their hold over us. For example, instead of assuming a friend’s silence means they’re upset with you, ask yourself if there might be other explanations—like they’re just busy or distracted.
How Counselling Can Help
Counselling can be effective in addressing cognitive distortions because it provides both a supportive environment and strategies for change. I will work with you to identify which cognitive distortions you’re prone to, helping you to challenge them in real time.
Here’s how it works:
- Guided Self-Reflection: I can help you to recognise and analyse automatic thoughts, questioning their validity and finding more balanced perspectives.
- Skill Development: Through sessions, you’ll learn tools like reframing, mindfulness and journaling to replace negative thinking with constructive thought patterns.
- Empowerment: My counselling and wellness sessions will empower you to be more than just a passive observer of your thoughts, equipping you with the skills to actively shape them.
Overcoming cognitive distortions is a journey and I offer guidance every step of the way, helping to foster resilience, improve self-esteem and create a more positive outlook. By identifying and reshaping these patterns, you can change your inner dialogue and approach life with a healthier, more balanced mindset.
